SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. (AP) -- Authorities in Virginia say a white man who said he was shot by two black men had actually shot himself.

Spotsylvania Sheriff's Lt. Charles Carey told news outlets deputies responding to a report of a shooting at a motel Saturday night found 23-year-old Eric Hunter Jones with a gunshot wound to his leg. Jones told the deputies that two black men had approached him outside, and one of them had shot them.

Detectives began interviewing witnesses, and determined that there were no suspects and Jones had shot himself. A search of Jones' motel room yielded a stolen gun.

He's charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, felony receiving stolen property, reckless handling of a firearm and filing a false police report. It's unclear whether he has a lawyer.
