Their story started back in 2011 when they made their first trip to Malawi where they saw firsthand the need.

“Who [children] have gotten sick with diseases like malnutrition, HIV, cancer, heart failure,” said Elizabeth.

They not only returned to the United States with heavy hearts but an extended family. They adopted Malawi, 11, from Ethiopia which is coincidentally her birth name. They also took in 8-year old twins, Shane and Kennedy. The Fitzgeralds already had two teenagers, Eeamon and Aine.

The family held a 24-hour race and run in early April to raise funds. Proceeds will go to help build facilities and provide extra resources for their colleagues in Malawi.

“I'll be taking care of patients there and then we'll be working on these projects that we raised money for so specifically building a pediatric laboratory so that kids won't die waiting for lab tests to tell s what's wrong with them,” said Elizabeth.
