NEWLAND, N.C. – North Carolina Christmas trees are headed to Washington, D.C. A total of 56 trees were loaded onto a tractor trailer in Newland Tuesday.

The trees were grown by Larry Smith for 13 years. Smith says these trees will be going into the presidential park to represent 50 states and six territories during the national Christmas tree lighting.

Students from each state will then make ornaments to be hung on the trees.

"That's sort of special that the Fraser firs here from North Carolina will be holding ornaments from our 50 states and six territories," Smith says.

Smith says during such a tough year, he is hoping these trees bring smiles to kids and adults.

This is not the first time one of Smith's trees headed to the white house. In 2018, Smith sent a 19-and-a-half foot tree to be the official White House tree.
