GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A group of community partners are coming together to fight food insecurity in Greensboro.

What You Need To Know

  • Greensboro has battled food insecurity in past years. The pandemic has made it more difficult for families.

  • Community partners provided free meals for families this summer

  • They've served more than 22,000 meals since June

Food hardship is no stranger to Greensboro and the pandemic has intensified the need. Local churches and nonprofit organizations collaborated to provide free meals for families in the city.

Coordinator, Jamilla Pinder explains, "We've had several partners come together in the faith-based community as well as other community-based organizations and provide resources and volunteer opportunities to be able to get meals out to individuals and communities."

Twice a week, families can drive up to 2515 Phillips Avenue, at the Renaissance Shopping Center, to pick up nutritional pre-packaged meals. Families can also pick up a box of fresh produce, grown locally by a Black-owned farm. Each box comes with a recipe to teach families how to make healthier choices.

Pinder says, "Kids need food to grow, food is medicine, so it's important to be able to provide food and children have an access."

The meals have made a difference for many families while their children are out of school. While they won't be out of class for much longer, organizers are also preparing them for the new school year with supplies.

Since June, volunteers have served more than 22,000 meals to families at Greater Hope Cathedral. Organizers plan to continue serving children and seniors in coming weeks.

"We're trying to brainstorm a little bit and just continue our partnerships with others to see if they're willing to come and help continue this effort because we know there's a great need over here. It's been a blessing, but also a question of how do we solve this problem," Pinder says.

Meals are available for pick-up on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2515 Phillips Avenue, Greensboro starting at 5:30 p.m. Adult meals will be ending within the next two weeks.
