MONTGOMERY COUNTY, N.C. -- A Montgomery County deputy, who was also a school resource officer, has died from complications from COVID-19.

Officials said Deputy Bud Phouangphrachanh learned of the virus on Sunday and succumbed to it on Tuesday.

He was referred to as "Deputy Bud" by his coworkers, community, and students as he served as a school resource officer.

Deputy Bud was a 14-year-veteran of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

"He was known for his big smile, sense of humor, and laughter," said Sheriff Chris Watkins. "Our hearts and prayers go out to his family as well as the families of all those throughout this world who have endured the loss of loved ones in this crisis."

Deputy Bud is survived by his wife, five children, brothers, and extended family, as well as his family and coworkers.
