FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. -- Students at North Forsyth High School are getting a second chance to fuel up for the day.

  • The school's principal helped come up with the idea after noticing students coming in right at the bell, without a chance of having breakfast before class
  • Now, students can grab a hot item like a sausage or chicken biscuit, cereal, fruit, milk, or even juice
  • She says about 70 to 100 students are taking advantage of the program

On Monday, the school kicked off its Second Chance Breakfast and Snack Attack Program.

The school's principal helped come up with the idea after noticing students coming in right at the bell, without a chance of having breakfast before class.

"We also had a lot of students who were coming into the cafeteria at the beginning of the lunch period to grab something quick before it was actually their lunch," said Principal Melita Wise.

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools' Child Nutrition Department says the program is especially helpful for high school students.

Now, students can grab a hot item like a sausage or chicken biscuit, cereal, fruit, milk, or even juice.

Wise says filling up before lunch can have a positive impact on her students' experiences in the classroom by maximizing the work they do in class.

She says about 70 to 100 students are taking advantage of the program.
