GREENSBORO, N.C.-- The University of North Carolina Greensboro’s Chance summer program has earned recognition from a national group for its efforts to increase Latinx student success.

  • The program started in 2017
  • Members say they work towards opening up higher education and building their community
  • Latinx students make up nine percent of UNCG’s student population

The program launched in 2017 as an intensive week-long college prep program for underserved Latinx high school students.

This year, Excelencia in Education called it a "program to watch," one of 20 nationwide.

“So, what we do is give them a week in the life of a college student,” said Rod Wyatt, Senior Director for UNCG Latinx Program.” Trying to help them understand what it looks like going to classes, interacting with faculty, staff, students.”

Members say they work towards opening up higher education and building their community.

“It’s definitely a Latino culture,” said Celeste Cervantes, mentor. “You can feel how affectionate everyone is, how the kind of importance we place on family and connection with friends. And also, there’s a lot of dancing a lot of music, a lot of having fun.”
