ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- A child is in critical condition following an incident on the Dan River Sunday afternoon.

The Madison-Rockingham County rescue squad came to the Lindsey Bridge Road access point, where they found an off-duty sheriff's deputy performing life saving efforts on the minor.
The rescue squad used a basket and rope to pull the child up a 50-foot embankment.

Rescuers took the child to a local hospital in critical condition.
