WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- As the City of Arts and Innovation, Winston-Salem officials want more startups to begin in the area, and so far they're succeeding.

  • "WalletHub just recently ranked Winston-Salem at the top with Austin, Texas and Charlotte, North Carolina in terms of percentage growth of new business startups," Mayor Allen Joines said
  • The success was on display Thursday when SWIPEBY launched. It's an app that allows users to turn restaurants into drive-throughs
  • Turner says he doesn't think he would be this far in the app's development without the help of Winston-Salem resources like the Chamber of Commerce, Flywheel Coworking, and Winston Starts

"WalletHub just recently ranked Winston-Salem at the top with Austin, Texas and Charlotte, North Carolina in terms of percentage growth of new business startups," Mayor Allen Joines said.

The success was on display Thursday when SWIPEBY launched. It's an app that allows users to turn restaurants into drive-throughs.

Like other popular services, you can order and pay through the app. The change is in how you get the food.

"The food gets prepared while you drive to the restaurant. You pull outside into one of our branded parking spots. We notify the staff inside, fully automatically. You don't need to press any buttons. We geo-fence your location. A waiter will come out, give you the food, and you can take off again," founder Carl Turner said. They're currently partnered with 40 Winston-Salem restaurants, and excited to expand.

Turner says he doesn't think he would be this far in the app's development without the help of Winston-Salem resources like the Chamber of Commerce, Flywheel Coworking, and Winston Starts.
