CLEMMONS, N.C. -- Local shops selling hemp-based products saw a huge spike in sales over the holidays.

  • One hemp and CBD dispensary is experiencing its first holiday season since opening.
  • The Dispensary Alternative Care Center saw a huge spike in sales right before Christmas.
  • The owner says sales are at an all-time high.

Marijuana still is not legal in the state, but it's the first holiday season that hemp-based products are legal in North Carolina. CBD products are now legal in North Carolina and across the U.S. You can see unique products on shelves like bath bombs, food seasonings, honey, tea, cotton candy, gummies, cookies and even treats for your pets.

"I was interested because of the anxiety, depression, sleepless, my sleeping you know. And for just my overall being, it seemed to help the way my attitude and everything. It seemed to help with that,” said customer and Welcome resident Charlise Morgan.

One hemp and CBD dispensary is experiencing its first holiday season since opening. The Dispensary Alternative Care Center in Clemmons saw a huge spike in sales right before Christmas.

"It's been really great. We've been blessed,” said owner Pete Zakamarek. “The customers have been coming in pretty steady, and picking up more and more. We seem to be getting a lot of repeat customers who are getting stuff for their family members and friends, and getting a bunch of little stocking stuffers here and there. Trying to spread the love of CBD products to everyone."

Zakamarek says his customers are now buying CBD products for their family who might not have tried anything like it to relieve pain, anxiety and depression, which is creating an entirely new customer base.

"We've had a lot of people who aren't quite comfortable with coming in, and are kinda still held back by the stigma of the product,” Zakamarek said. “Their family members buy for them, and once they see the results of the products they're really happy with what they get."

Zakamarek says the biggest seller this holiday season by far was the hemp flower. He says it is high CBD and has a lot of health benefits.

"But it won't get you high because of the low delta 9 THC level,” Zakamarek said.

He says between holiday gifting and the Farm Bill signed by President Trump the week before Christmas, sales are at an all-time high.

"People found out that it's 100 percent legal, federally,” Zakamarek said. “So, they became even more comfortable with visiting our shop. So, that little bit of news helped everything out."

"And you're supporting the local farmers. Which I love that also. We're from a farming community in Illinois,” Morgan, a new customer said.

Zakamarek says he also advertised several holiday specials that he suspects helped drive up sales around Christmas.
