GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Days after a tanker caught fire on an I-73 bridge, officials are still determining what the next steps will be.

On Thursday, a tanker carrying around 8,400 gallons of gas crashed after hitting ice on the I-73 southbound bridge above the I-85 northbound lane.

One lane was opened soon after, and officials say a second will open Tuesday.

"NCDOT Structures Unit has made an evaluation of the bridge, and has determined the bridge is safe for two lanes of traffic." Brad Wall said. He works for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Before they can open the third lane, they have to wait on test results from the beams under the lane.

"There's six beams under this bridge, and beams 5 and 6 were exposed to the most heat. You've got some other elements under the bridge that were exposed to heat as well," Wall said.

They're expecting test results around Wednesday, and will then make the decision whether repairs or replacement is necessary.

Tim Sherrill of the NCDOT says they will try to repair the beams, even if there is damage.

"Because of the way this bridge is built if we had to replace the beams we would almost certainly have to shut the bridge down completely," Sherill said.

Both Sherrill and Wall said the open lanes are structurally sound, and any repairs they make will last the lifetime of the bridge.
