HIGH POINT, N.C. -- In the city he grew up in, Danny Rogers was sworn in as the new Guilford County sheriff.

  • Rogers is the first African-American to hold the position
  • He's already made some changes to personnel, and plans to continue to update the office
  • One of his main objectives is to increase trust between the community and law enforcement

On Monday he replaced BJ Barnes, who held the position for 24 years.

Rogers is the first African-American to hold the position. He acknowledged the history he made but doesn't want people to think outside factors will impact his decision making.

"I'm not a sheriff that's focusing on the fact of bringing just people of color. We want to make sure that the sheriff's office understands and the citizens of Guilford County understand that we want to bring in the qualified personnel," Rogers said.

He's already made some changes to personnel and plans to continue to update the office.

"I want to continue to evaluate the sheriff's office. That's what we've been doing. We've been going through, vetting, making sure that we do the right thing about personnel as well as for our citizens of Guilford County."

One of his main objectives is to increase trust between the community and law enforcement. He says people should plan to see more of deputies around the county.

Things have been contentious with the outgoing sheriff, but Rogers' supporters want people to look to the future.

"Give this man a chance to show us what he can do, and give him time to do it. Don't expect anything to happen overnight because that sometimes is disappointing. We're going to give Danny Rogers a chance to be sheriff," Portia Shipman said.

There are high hopes for what Sheriff Rogers can accomplish over the next four years.

"The youth need our help. Some of them are fatherless children. We're talking about black and white. They all need love and need inspiration, and we believe that Danny Rogers will inspire them maybe one day to be sheriff," Ron Tuck said.
