WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Hundreds of families in Winston-Salem's Southside community joined together for a hot Thanksgiving meal, with a side of fellowship.

  • Hall-Woodward Elementary School hosted the event.
  • The East Forsyth High School football team to handle the service.
  • Organizers estimate they served about 300 families Thursday afternoon.

Hall-Woodward Elementary School hosted the event, and got some help from the East Forsyth High School football team to handle the service.

Eric Jones, the event organizer and head football coach, said, “You can’t help children if you don’t help the family because at the end of the day they’re going home. And so when we talk about helping children and wanting them to perform in school, understand that and [an] essential piece is making sure that the family dynamic is okay too.”

Nickolas Childs, a senior football player at East Forsyth, said, “They come see us, they’re supporters, they’re fans that come out and see us play so I feel like giving back, just a little time out of our schedules to give back, pass out drinks, pass out food, you know, it doesn’t take that much.”

Organizers estimate they served about 300 families Thursday afternoon.
