WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Winston-Salem police are investigating two homicides that occurred Wednesday night. 

  • Police are investigating two deadly shootings in Winston-Salem.
  • One was on West 23rd Street and the other on Gilmer Avenure.
  • This marks 22 homicides in the city this year. 

One person is dead following a shooting on West 23rd Street. Police say they received multiple calls of shots fired in the area just before 8p.m.

A short time later, police learned the victim arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound. He later died from his injuries.

Officers were also called to a home on Gilmer Avenue in Winston-Salem in response to another deadly shooting.

Police say 32-year-old James Stephens was found lying in the road just 9:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives do not believe the shootings are connected at this time.

The two homicides mark the 21st and 22nd homicides this year, compared with 21 at this time last year.
