GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Greensboro Aquatic Center is preparing for a busy winter.

  • The 2018 Winter National Championships and the 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Championships - East will be held in Greensboro
  • The proposed new pool will add 19 lanes to the center
  • The goal is to have the pool complete by next July

Officials announced Thursday that the 2018 Winter National Championships and the 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Championships - East will be held in Greensboro.

Director of the GAC, Susan Braman, says the entire community profits from the meets.

"Those two events will bring in over 2,000 swimmers and then of course their parents. People will benefit from that at the restaurants, the grocery stores, the hotels," she said.

The proposed new pool will add 19 lanes to the center.

Matt Brown, the general manager of the Greensboro Coliseum, said they won't use taxpayer money to fund the project.

"This fourth planned pool would be paid for 100 percent by non-taxpayer dollars, generated by the very hotel room nights that are being booked from the events we're hosting at the GAC." he said.

The city council has to approve the pool before the center can break ground.

The goal is to have the pool complete by next July.
