NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. -- Wrightsville Beach is working to keep the oceanfront pristine with a new $9.4 million renourishment project.

The project will span more than a 1,000 feet from the Blockade Runner Beach Resort to the Holiday Inn. Crews are pumping in 700,000 cubic yards of sand from the ocean and onto the shore to make it all happen.

A business manager said these efforts are extremely important for tourism.

"We want to keep it nice, keep it clean, keep people coming in and want a reason to visit Wrightsville Beach,” said William Heinen.

The project should wrap up before April.

FEMA reports more than 80 percent of the country’s coastlines are eroding.
