ONSLOW COUNTY - Onslow County Partnership for Children is offering classes on dealing with some of the frustrations of parenting.
Group Triple P, a positive parenting program, is a six-week long class giving parents the tools to help manage challenges like tantrums, disobedience and aggression.
"Stomping, yelling, screaming, slamming doors...we're like there's gotta be a better way to do this," said Shannon Cascarano, parent.
Raising her 3 year old started off pretty tough for her.
"My confidence was lower. I was struggling. I was discombobulated. I was like, 'I don't know what to do with this child,'" said Cascarano.
It's the same feeling most parents get, but Group Triple P, a positive parenting program, is available to tackle just that.
"In the beginning of the class we do goal settings. What is really the one behavior that you want to focus on throughout the class to try and work on and lessen? So we've had anything from temper tantrums....trouble going to bed at night," said Molly DeWitt, parent educator.
Parents brainstorm strategies on how to manage their child's challenging behavior.
"It's all developmentally appropriate, but we want to help parents learn better ways to deal with those so they can be more successful in their parenting and feel joyful when they're dealing with their children."
"We would tell him no and he would literally throw himself on the floor. So through this class we learn to just walk away, ignore it, not even one single motion....straight poker face," said Cascarano.
"For an example...last week we sent them home with some charts so they could track some particular behaviors to see how often something is occurring," said DeWitt.
It's making the role of parenting a lot easier.
"Now it's like, 'OK...I gotta plan. I know what to do if he does this. I know what I'm going to do if he doesn't do this.' It's just peace of mind," said Cascarano.
