WILMINGTON -- Coastal drivers faced hazardous road conditions Tuesday, as snow and rain brought reports of several accidents.

“Some people were driving too slow and some people were driving too fast. It's been something else this morning,” said Chris Sutton, a Wilmington resident.

On Interstate 40 in New Hanover County, several emergency crews responded to drivers who had collisions or skidded off the road into ditches. Some drivers said they were taking extra precautions as a result.

"I've got four wheel drive, but if there's ice, I get off the road,” one said.

"I've got two blankets in the back of the car and I've got extra water. And I've got fruit and I've got snacks so that in case anything happens, my husband and I are taken care of,” said Barbara Bordeaux, a Carolina Beach resident.

Transportation and safety officials continue to encourage caution on the roads, offering tips like maintaining a safe following distance, clearing lanes for road crews, and being aware of other drivers.

"There are various levels of experience on the roadway, so therefore think about the next guy, next person, that they might not be as experienced as you,” explained Gerard Taylor, an official with the state’s Dept. of Transportation.

Gerard said hundreds of pieces of equipment are on the roads to deal with conditions in Division 3, which includes New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Onslow, Duplin, and Sampson counties.
