JACKSONVILLE, NC. -- A Jacksonville  mother and daughter shared a proud moment together this weekend, graduating college together.

  • For two and half years, Annisha and her 22-year-old daughter Akira dedicated their lives to studying
  • They even took several classes together like psychology, math and were lab partners in Geology
  • The pair graduated with Associates Degrees in Fine Arts Saturday morning and walked across the stage together

Forty-four-year-old Annisha Maxwell got inspired when she took her daughter to freshman orientation two and half years ago at Coastal Carolina Community College.  She said a professor’s speech changed her life.

The former United States Marine, and mother of four spent the last 20 years raising her family  She plans on pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

“He said it was never too late to enroll in school, and I was so inspired by his speech that I ended up going to student services and getting the application to enroll that day,” says Maxwell.

"You can do it regardless of your age.  When I first started school I thought I was going to feel bad because I was the oldest person in the class, but you know that ended up being a benefit to me because I was mature, I got my work done on time," says Annisha Maxwell.

The pair graduated with associates degrees in fine arts Saturday morning and walked across the stage together.

Annisha wants to go on to earn a bachelor's in psychology and her daughter is considering joining the military before earning her bachelor's degree.
