CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. -- Two siblings are recovering after being rescued from a rip current at Atlantic Beach Wednesday evening.

  • The boy was rescued by the father before the Atlantic Beach Fire Department arrived on scene.
  • The girl was rescued, had CPR performed on her, did not regain consciousness but had a pulse and labored breathing.
  • Fire Chief Simpson said red flags were flying at the time of the rescues, which indicate dangerous ocean conditions.

Newly sworn-in fire chief Mike Simpson got the call around 5:30 p.m. about multiple people in distress in the ocean.

The siblings, a 5 or 6-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl, became caught in the current when bystanders attempted to rescue them.

The boy was rescued by the father before the Atlantic Beach Fire Department arrived on scene.

The girl was rescued, had CPR performed on her, did not regain consciousness but had a pulse and labored breathing. She was taken to the hospital and is said to be regaining some consciousness and seems to be stabilizing.

Officials say the boy did not require medical attention, but was also taken to the hospital.

No one else was hurt in the incident.
