KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. -- Monday is the anniversary of The Wright Brothers’ first flight.

  • 115 years ago, Wilbur and Orville Wright conducted the first heavier-than-air, controlled, powered flight
  • The Wright Brothers Memorial Visitor Center in Kill Devil Hills celebrated by hosting a series of events throughout the day
  • One of NASA's hidden figures, Katherine G. Johnson, was also honored

115 years ago, Wilbur and Orville Wright conducted the first heavier-than-air, controlled, powered flight in Kitty Hawk.

The Wright Brothers Memorial Visitor Center in Kill Devil Hills celebrated by hosting a series of events throughout the day, including a small aviation flyover at the exact moment the wright brothers made their first flight.

One of NASA's hidden figures, Katherine G. Johnson, was also honored. Johnson performed complex calculations that allowed space flight. Her life story inspired the Oscar nominated movie, Hidden Figures.

Her daughter says Johnson's legacy has helped motivate women today.
