CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. -- Since Hurricane Florence, the Core Soundings Waterfowl Museum has seen $2 million worth of damage to its roof, walls, and floors.

  • The 26th annual Waterfowl Weekend went on despite the damages
  • Artisans travel from all over the state to Harker's Island to buy, sell, and admire handmade decoys and art.
  • The board of directors is rebuilding the roof to better withstand future storms.

The damages, however, did not stop the museum's board members from hosting the 26th annual Waterfowl Weekend.

Artisans travel from all over the state to Harker's Island to buy, sell, and admire handmade decoys and art.

Beneath the exposed ductwork, old friends reconnect.

“To me it always feels like a homecoming," said Vice Chair Corey Lawrence. "Because sometimes we only see people that travel so far to be here, we only see them this one time of year. And it’s a great event to see those people.”

Lawrence says the board of directors is rebuilding the roof to better withstand future storms.
