JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -- Making the transition from military into the civilian working world can be challenging, but not if there's a whole community of employers behind our veterans.

  • The unemployment rate in North Carolina for the veterans is about 3.1 percent.
  • Sixty-five employers set up booths at the American Legion in Jacksonville for the veterans career fair.
  • NCWorks Career Center puts on a veterans job fair twice a year, once in June and once again in November.

“Everybody wants to hire veterans because they know they will train, they're loyal, they're motivated, and they're going to be at work everyday,” said Archie Barrow who is the director of Veterans Employment Services for NCWorks Career Center for North Carolina.

Barrow manages 70 veteran liaisons for NCWorks across the state, whose job it is to go out into the community and link up veterans with companies hiring.

“The unemployment rate in North Carolina for the veterans is like 3.1 percent. We are a little bit lower than the civilian sector, but we still need to go lower. We have a lot of transitioning service members, still coming out every year. There's about 12,000 that transition out of North Carolina bases. We are trying to do whatever we can to keep them here.”

Sixty-five employers set up booths at the American Legion in Jacksonville for the veterans career fair from all across the state.

“We are looking for good candidates from all over North Carolina and from past events we've attended down here. Jacksonville is an area where you have individuals in the military, or they’ve gotten out of the military, and we basically look for those type of individuals,” said Tony Phifer, a recruiter with the Greensboro Police Department.

NCWorks Career Center puts on a veterans job fair twice a year, once in June and once again in November and they're already looking for more employers to participate in that event. If you are interested, please contact Gerardo Cruz at 910-347-2121 ext. 213 or email him at gerardo.cruz@nccommerce.com
