NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. – The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after they say a homeowner shot and killed an intruder late Monday night.

Deputies say it happened around 9:30 p.m. at the home in the 200 block of Mohawk Trail.

The homeowner said he was home when he heard someone kick in the back door and a man entered his home.

He told deputies that he grabbed his gun and shot the intruder once.

The sheriff’s office said the intruder died from a gunshot wound.

Neither the name of the homeowner nor the shooting victim has been released.

The incident is being investigated.
