RALEIGH, N.C. — The 12th annual V Week for Cancer Research is remembering and honoring the life of former NC State Men’s Basketball Coach Jim Valvano.  From basketball games to television segments and even the naming of an arena, the coach who founded the non-profit’s legacy lives on.

Spectrum News anchor Caroline Blair sat down with Sherrie Mazur of the V Foundation for Cancer Research for a look at the many ways they’re keeping his legacy alive while pushing for advancements in cancer research. Prior to losing his battle with cancer back in 1993, Coach Valvano gave a speech that still inspires many today. Fast forward to 2018, and the work to find a cure for cancer continues through the foundation in his name.

Each year, the V Week for Cancer Research launches across all ESPN platforms, an inspirational time meant for fundraising and awareness about cancer.  The week offers a number of inspirational messages from sports greats, while also collecting stories from everyday people. Men and women’s basketball games are also a part of the week, along with the naming of an arena in Coach Jimmy V’s honor. 

This year, a new program called Kicks to Beat Cancer is also launching, where celebrities auction off their shoes in hopes of raising funds.
