1. NWS confirms EF-1 tornado touched down in Great Valley Monday
The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in the town of Great Valley in Cattaraugus County on Monday.
2. Revisiting the Dannemora prison escape, manhunt 10 years later
Spectrum News 1 returns to the prison in northern New York where it began, starting with Tuesday's 8 p.m. showing of "Escape from Dannemora: Retold a Decade Later."
3. Families of Flight 3407 victims concerned over FAA administrator nominee
The families stated that the man in question, Bryan Bedford, has attempted to reduce the amount of required pilot training in half. The current requirement of 1,500 hours came from the Airline Safety Act of 2010. The legislation passed about a year and a half after the 3407 tragedy. The families urge Bedford, if confirmed, to put safety first.
4. Demolition work begins at Paul William Beltz office building after May fire
In a statement, officials from Paul William Beltz said that the process, "starting with staging and localization around the site," is now underway and will continue over the coming weeks.
5. Dems agree to pass N.Y. prison reforms in session's waning hours
Senate and Assembly Democrats late Monday reached an agreement to pass a series of prison reforms to improve accountability in state facilities on the heels of recent deaths of two incarcerated men who had violent encounters with multiple correction officers.
6. Bills RB James Cook present for team's mandatory practice amid contract concerns, AP source says
Cook’s attendance comes after he went public with his desire to negotiate a contract extension while entering the fourth and final year of his rookie deal. He was the NFL’s co-leader in rushing touchdowns with 16 last year, and skipped Buffalo’s six previous spring practices and month-long workout sessions, all of which were voluntary.

When severe weather gives ‘gut punch,’ insurance brings headaches for New York farmers
In 2024, New York farmers lost $91 million from major disasters and severe weather, according to a market analysis from the American Farm Bureau. Excess precipitation, flooding and tropical storms accounted for $37 million in crop losses for New York.
The New York Farm Bureau has said improving crop insurance for specialty crop producers is a priority for the new federal farm bill, which has yet to be passed and still operates under standards set in 2018.
