We’re wrapping up the day for you with the most important stories you need to know and your weather outlook.
Your Weather Planner
We will be locked into a pattern of typical summer weather Saturday and Sunday. That means heat, humidity, and a few afternoon and evening showers and storms.
Though daytime highs will not reach record levels we saw this week, it will still be hot and humid enough to give us relatively high heat index values in the afternoons.
For tonight, any shower threat will end, and we'll see partly cloudy skies. Saturday and Sunday also will be partly cloudy.
The chance for scattered showers and storms will increase during the workweek.

1. Shorter lines at the DMV? North Carolina hopes new program will speed things up
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is working to speed up check-ins this summer. DMV Commissioner Paul Tine said the extreme heat means no one should be outside. “There shouldn’t be lines when you get there once we have things fully implemented,” Tine said. The department launched a pilot program this week that aims to cut wait times in half.
2. Helene 9 months later: Black Mountain seeking permanent fix to water infrastructure
Sixty percent of Black Mountain’s water supply was wiped out when Hurricane Helene destroyed the main transmission line from Asheville, leaving thousands of residents without clean water. Crews worked for weeks to restore temporary service by mid-October. Long-term repairs could cost millions, and town leaders are seeking state and federal grants to build a storm-resistant system by next spring.
3. Photos: Chimney Rock State Park reopens, Gov. Stein signs Helene recovery bill
Gov. Josh Stein was in western North Carolina nine months after Hurricane Helene devastated the region to sign the latest round of funding relief for residents. He visited Chimney Rock State Park, which was reopened.
4. Man fatally shot in fight with Newton officers after high speed chase
Police tried to stop Camden Childers, 21, of Stanley, North Carolina, shortly before midnight on Highway 70, according to a release. Childers failed to stop his motorcycle, police said, and led officers on a chase. After a collision with a patrol car, Childers got into a “brief physical altercation” in which he was shot.
5. Supreme Court limits nationwide injunctions, but fate of Trump birthright citizenship order unclear
A divided Supreme Court ruled that individual judges lack the authority to grant nationwide injunctions. The outcome was a victory for President Donald Trump, who has complained about individual judges throwing up obstacles to his agenda. But a conservative high court majority left open the possibility that Trump’s birthright citizenship restrictions could remain blocked nationwide.
