NORTH CAROLINA -- A favorite summertime hobby for many is the garden, and what garden would be complete without tomatoes? Are you noticing fewer tomatoes being produced this year compared to most years?

  • Tomato plants produce fewer blossoms, and what blossoms do form often fall off prior to producing, when nighttime temperatures do not drop below 70 degrees
  • This summer, by and large, has been exceedingly muggy with higher than normal dewpoint temperatures
  • So if your tomato production has been less than ideal.... blame the weather!

If so, the problem is probably not you, it's the weather.

Tomato plants produce fewer blossoms, and what blossoms do form often fall off prior to producing, when nighttime temperatures do not drop below 70 degrees.

This summer, by and large, has been exceedingly muggy with higher than normal dew point temperatures. The temperature cannot fall below the dew point, and we have quite often had dew point temperatures in the 70s in the Carolinas this summer. This, in turn, has led to lots of mild nighttime temperatures.

So if your tomato production has been less than ideal.... blame the weather!
