RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes celebrated their first playoff game in 10 years with a victory over the Washington Capitals on Monday night. However, it came with a cost after their 2nd overall pick from last year's NHL Draft got into a scuffle with Alexander Ovechkin during the 1st period of their game.

Svechnikov was officially put into the NHL's concussion protocol on Wednesday and he is not expected to play in Thursday's game 4. Head coach Rod Brind'Amour would not say as much in a media availability Tuesday morning.

Brind'Amour stated, "He's in the concussion protocol, obviously, and it was good to see him. I got asked last night where he was and he did go to the hospital and everything checked out there so that's it." Brind'Amour added that he would assume Svechnikov will be out for their next game.

Svechnikov, who is the youngest player participating in the NHL playoffs, scored two goals in the series opener last Thursday and he is considered one of the Canes' best players on the roster. The Canes have recalled forward Patrick Brown up from the Checkers to play on an emergency basis.
