Hilary Powell is a Hoosier who is blessed to be back in the Carolinas. She considers reporting in Charlotte a full-circle moment since she was a freelance reporter around The Upstate for The Spartanburg-Herald Journal right after grad school.

She is an AP award-winning journalist.

Hilary most recently served viewers as a reporter for WSBT-TV, the CBS affiliate near the University of Notre Dame. She also served as an anchor, reporter, and managing producer for PBS in Northwest Indiana.

After college, Hilary cut her teeth in network television as an intern for The Oprah Winfrey Show, and worked her way up to being one of the youngest associate producers of digital content for The Oprah Winfrey Network.

Hilary feels honored that reporting has taken her across the world in search of the truth. She’s reported from the DMZ border between North and South Korea and covered the European refugee crisis on the ground in Berlin, Brussels, and the Czech Republic as a fellow with the Radio Television Digital News Association and RIAS Berlin Kommission. She's also been a reporting fellow with the German American Fulbright Kommission.

Hilary is a double graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, earning her bachelor's in broadcast journalism and her master's in new media.

She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the Society of Professional Journalists.

She also has a spirit to serve – having been on the board of directors for the Indiana Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the national board for Journalism and Women Symposium.

Hilary was a news nerd from the start – and completed a dozen internships and journalism trainings before she landed her first job. It’s probably why she has a passion for mentoring young girls. You’ll also find her volunteering as a court watcher for survivors of domestic violence.
