  • Realtors volunteered for a day to help homeowners in need

  • Canopy Housing Foundation was behind the event, which took place in Iredell, Mecklenburg and Haywood counties

  • More than 350 Realtors participated in the event

  • They worked on repairs ranging from cleaning gutters to working on home builds with Habitat for Humanity

The Canopy Housing Foundation, the charitable arm of Canopy Realtor Association, hosted the Realtors Care Day in Mecklenburg, Iredell and Haywood counties.

One of the beneficiaries of the work in Charlotte was Marjorie Parker, who is on a fixed income. She has lived in the Hidden Valley neighborhood for 47 years.

Volunteers, appraisers and inspectors did home repairs, including fixing her deck and cleaning her gutters.

“We’re able to go out into the community and help homeowners that have fallen on hard times. They just need some assistance to keep their property in great shape,” said Realtor and member of Canopy Realtor Association Lori Randolph.

Parker is grateful for the help. She said her clogged gutters contributed to her basement flooding during Helene in September, which left her with costly repairs.

“It cost $12,000 worth of damage simply because gutters are not clean, a threshold doesn’t have the doors secure. That’s why the work that they're doing is important,” Parker said.

In western North Carolina, an area devastated by Helene, volunteers repaired and worked on home builds with Habitat for Humanity.

“We are excited to roll up our sleeves, come out and lend a helping hand,” Randolph said.

Parker said there are programs that help, but she has been above the income threshold in the past.

“To have a program of volunteers that they're not thinking about your income, they are just fixing it because you're a senior and you need help, that is an incredible blessing,” Parker said.

As part of the event, they hosted food drives. In Mecklenburg County, they benefited Nourish Up, and in Haywood County, they supported Pigeon Community Center, Friends of the Haywood County Animal Shelter and Friendship House.
