DURHAM, N.C. — A police officer is in a hospital after being shot in Oxford, North Carolina, Friday. Police arrested a man after an hourslong standoff.
Neighbors and officials say a man started shooting and barricaded himself inside a house Friday night. The officer, identified as Daniel Allen, was airlifted to Duke Health in Durham with a gunshot wound to his leg, officials say.
Valerie Fields, a neighbor, said she had to crawl and roll down a hill to get away from the gunfire.
"He was in the window and he was saying all kind of stuff. Then police showed up and he basically started shooting," Fields said. "Shooting at police, shooting at everybody."
Oxford is a small town in Granville County, about an hour north of Raleigh.
Police surrounded the home Friday night. After midnight, officers fired teargas into the home. The scene was quiet by about 1 a.m.
