CHARLOTTE, N.C. — No one was hurt in a police shooting northwest of uptown Charlotte on Thursday evening.

The shooting happened just after 5 p.m. off Onyx Street near Beatties Ford Road. A spokesperson with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says they were alerted to a stolen car in the area. When police attempted to stop the car, the driver, armed with a gun, ran off.

“Multiple officers perceived an imminent threat and discharged their service weapons,” CMPD said.

No one was hit or injured.

The suspect who fled the traffic stop was identified Friday as Shaheem Covington, 18, police said in a news release. Covington was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and fleeing and resisting officers, and two juveniles were charged with possession of a firearm by a minor, police said.

Officers found multiple guns at the scene.

CMPD says multiple officers are being placed on paid administrative leave while authorities investigate, which is standard protocol in a police shooting.
