Historic Bethabara Park in Winston-Salem gives visitors a taste of what life was like back when the Moravians settled there in the 1750s through tours and demonstrations.

Keith Roberts plays a part in bringing that history to life through his work as a blacksmith and guide. He said his work at the park is a dream part-time job.

“I’m doing what I used to get spankings for. Get dirty, make noise and play in the fire,” Roberts said.

Roberts, and his fellow guide Andrew Craver, create simple souvenirs for guests while explaining the history of the park. Roberts knows not everyone shares his love of the subject, but said dressing in costume, shaping metal and telling stories tends to have a magical effect on visitors of all ages.

“You start talking about the history and things that happened here, and you see it come alive in their eyes,” Roberts said.
