GREENSBORO, N.C. — Twelve families in Greensboro could be evicted from their homes because the land their trailers are on is up for sale.
The families, many who have lived in the community for decades, live in the Jamison Mobile Home Park on Hiatt Street. Now, the owner of the land has plans to sell the property to another party who wants to develop student housing.
Residents say they are worried because there are scarce options for affordable living. Laura Garduno with Siembra NC fights for the Latinx community in North Carolina. She says residents should have a say in what happens moving forward.
“Families who live in mobile homes don’t really have many options of where to take their trailer, or they have to move to faraway places so what my hope is that families, like the families that are living here on Hiatt Street, have the chance to know what’s happening with the property that they have been renting, and if they become organized, and if they want to be in a position to become owners of the land that they have a chance to be the first ones to be considered," Garduno said.
The community is calling on the developer to back out of the contract with the land owner. Francisca Gonzales Sanchez has lived in her trailer home for 17 years. She says she and the other families have raised money and have financing options on the table so they can purchase the property if given the chance to do so.
“The bank gave us a loan for all of these families, and we qualified to buy the land too," Gonzales Sanchez said.
Spectrum News 1 reached out to the current land owners for a comment but as of publication of this article, have not heard back. According to the Census Bureau, mobile homes make up nearly 13% of North Carolina's housing stock; amounting to nearly 480,000 homes.
