According to WBTV, Omari Drovon Alexander, 19, was shot multiple times early Saturday as he sat in the driver’s seat of a black 2015 Chevrolet Camaro in Hickory.

Officers found him around 12:50 a.m. Saturday with the engine still running in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Lenoir-Rhyne says the Hickory Police Department is investigating, but the shooting is believed to be an isolated incident and no ongoing threat is present.

According to The Hickory Daily Record, Lenoir-Rhyne University President Fred Whitt sent an email to the community around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday to tell them of Alexander’s death.

“Out of respect for his family, the university will have no further comment at this time,” the university said in a statement posted to Facebook.

Alexander was a tight end for the Lenoir-Rhyne University football team. According to the university’s website, he was from Charlotte and went to high school at Mallard Creek.

The vice president for athletics, Kim Pate said in a statement on the school's website, "Omari was a special young man who had a bright future. He will always be remembered fondly by his teammates and the LR community."

The university says grief counseling is available to all students, faculty and staff this weekend. A memorial service will also be held Monday, Nov. 22, at 10 a.m. in the PE Monroe Auditorium.
