NORTH CAROLINA — A college fair coming to Charlotte and Durham offers on-the-spot admissions and scholarship opportunities for high school seniors.

Any student can register for the Infinite Scholars program college fair. Historically Black Colleges and Universities and private schools from all over will be coming to our backyard to seek out top students.

What You Need To Know

Students are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their transcripts, ACT/SAT scores, letters of recommendation, a resume and an essay entitled "Why I want to attend college."

Infinite Scholars started in 2003 by English and History teacher Thomas Ousley. Ousley worked with low-income students and found that many who deserved and wanted to go to college weren't going because of financial barriers. The N.C. director of the program, Trivon Madison, said this fair takes that barrier away.

Madison says college application fees are waived at the fair and scholarship opportunities are opened up.

"To have that parent in tears, to say 'you know what, my child is the first one in the family to go to college' — that's huge," Madison said. "It changes the trajectory of that family."

Their website indicates the program was started, "to ensure that financially-disadvantaged students deserving to go to college could receive the funding they needed."

Since 2003, the Infinite Scholars program says it has served 200,000 students and facilitated over $2 billion in scholarships and financial aid.
