LINVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Four hikers were injured at one of North Carolina’s most popular tourist attractions when lightning from a fast-approaching storm struck near them.

It happened Friday at Grandfather Mountain in Avery County. One of the hikers was taken to the hospital. The person was in a group of seven hiking in a backcountry portion of Grandfather Mountain around MacRae Peak.

Part of the mountain is operated as a state park, with the rest run by the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation.

The mountain soars nearly 6,000 feet (1,850 meters) above sea level.
