GREENSBORO, N.C. — Travel agents say 2020 has been an unprecedented year in their industry due to the pandemic.

"Cancellations, there have been many. There are many. People need to cancel. Luckily, the industry has really stepped up as a whole to be very accommodating for the changing needs of travelers," said Chelsea Mendoza, the owner and agent for Chelsea Mendoza Travel.

Mendoza said being a travel agent in 2020 has been a unique experience, but in some cases it is still safe to book a trip.

"Airlines, hotels, and resorts are all taking sanitation very seriously and it's one of the cleanest times you could possibly travel, as long as you're abiding by the local ordinances and rules when you get there, and when you return," she said.

However, Mendoza also said she understands when clients want to cancel and has been helping them get refunds or reschedule.

"We're just going to have to play it by ear. We definitely would like to do this trip at some point in the future, but we want to make sure that it's safe and that everything is open so that we're not going to have to be adjusting based on limitations and closures," her client, Elizabeth Crouch, said.

Mendoza said she is recommending all her clients get trip protection in case they have to cancel.
