CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two teenage brothers in Charlotte created a college scholarship and say they are in need of applicants!

David Hogg is a college student at UNC Charlotte and his brother Jake Hogg is in high school. They came up with the idea to create a scholarship for other teens doing acts of kindness.

“I know that not everyone, myself included, have parents who are going to pay for their school,” David Hogg says. “I work two jobs myself, plus going to school full time.”

Hogg says last year he spent dozens of hours writing essays for college scholarships. Those scholarships are now helping him pay for college at UNC Charlotte.

“He kind of came up with this idea because he wrote so many essays himself, trying to get scholarships," his brother Jake Hogg says. “He tried a lot of times and a lot of times it didn’t work.”

Both brothers know the financial pressure college students can face. It’s why they decided to raise money so they could create their own scholarship. They raised enough to award three $500 scholarships to students.

“We want to encourage youth to be kind and separate the current ideology that youth only care about themselves,” David Hogg says.

David Hogg has volunteered his whole life and he knows the impact it can have on others. He says his most memorable experience is when he helped a Vietnam veteran who recently had knee surgery and was struggling financially.

“We realized he was a little depressed due to money issues,” he says.

Hogg says he helped out with chores around the house and then surprised the man with a check and gift card.

“I saw the drastic difference and the weight that lifted off his shoulder when I gave him money and a gift card for food,” he says.

David Hogg wants other teens to make the same impact in their communities, while also getting some assistance for college.
