They account for 27 percent of Mecklenburg County's cases, 34 percent of Wake County's, and around 54 percent of Forsyth County's cases. The last numbers from the Census Bureau show those who identify as Hispanic or Latino accounted for nine percent of the state's populaiton.

Nora Toncel is a neighborhood engagement partner for Novant Health. She works at the Waughtown testing site and helps Spanish-speaking patients feel more comfortable.

"If you can just smile, and at least welcome them for being there, assure them everything is going to be all right in their own language, that immediately destroys that barrier," she said.

Toncel said not only does she help translate, she also points the Hispanic community to resources to help them during this time.

Mi Casa, a nonprofit social services organization in Forsyth County, said it is helping the community find resources like food banks, rent and utility assistance organizations, and is collecting food to give out.

Novant Health offers free testing to those with and without health insurance.
