CLOVER, S.C. -- Parishioners held a surprise drive-by parade for their pastor on Sunday afternoon.

The First Free Will Baptist Church of Clover congregation wanted to celebrate Rev. Marvin Carson’s 83rd birthday and his 46 years of service at that church.

“It was a great surprise to me. Everybody kept it a secret. The pastor is always the last one to know,” Carson said.

He added the surprise made his day.

“It makes my heart swell over with love. I love them and they love me,” Carson said.

Efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 have prevented church members from attending in person services for almost a month. This is the first time Carson has been able to see many of his parishioners.

“When you don’t see each other for a month. That love is still there. It’s good to see all of them come, Amen,” Carson said.

Worship is currently being held online only. However, parishioners wanted to do something special for the pastor to show their appreciation.

“This is the way we could do that and have social distancing and abide by the law,” Parishioner Crystal Lambert said.

Lambert, who organized the parade, was encouraged to see the turnout.

“It was precious to see him be that happy,” Lambert said.

For parishioner Mary Barnwell it was a must to participate in the parade.

“He does so much for us. He pretty much gives his life to us and we want to give a little back,” Barnwell said.

Carson is grateful for the gesture, which he said he will never forget.

“It will definitely stick in my heart. It has been a joy,” Carson said.

About 40 cars drove by the pastor’s house while being escorted by Clover Police officers.
