SURRY COUNTY, N.C. -- Educating children in the midst of a pandemic is a situation so many parents never expected to do and yet are now tasked with, not only in our state, but across the country. 

Abigail Vipperman lives in Surry county with three kids- a middle schooler, an elementary schooler, and a baby.

This season serves as a learning curve for all of them. 

“We are definitely not teachers and we are not qualified to be teachers so we are doing the best we can with the tools that we have been given,” Vipperman says.

She praises the tools given to parents so far in Surry County.

“The Surry County Schools System has been awesome along with connecting with the teachers and helping teachers connect with students, and keeping students fed and making sure they are safe,” Vipperman explained.

But she also acknowledges teaching is tough. 

Vipperman and her boyfriend are also navigating enrolling second grader Alex who recently moved back into their home from Florida over spring break. 

“We don’t know what he was working on in school, in the school he was in in Florida, plus we are trying to get him enrolled back in elementary school here, and it ’s hard to do because first off , you don’t want to go out and get sick," she said. " You don’t know where all this mess is. But it’s also hard because we are just playing everything by ear.”

They like all families are attempting to pair education with fun during the stay-at-home order. 

“It’s kind of tough on them being isolated at home and having to kind of depend on each other, trying to find things to do where they are not bored plus things where they can learn where they are not falling behind,” she says.
