One Charlotte non-profit that works with the elderly is asking for help to keep their clients healthy.

Friendship Trays, an organization similar to Meals on Wheels, makes and delivers food to the sick and elderly in the Charlotte area. The people the group provides to are the most at risk for getting sick and catching the coronavirus.

The staff is preparing for possible quarantines related to the outbreak, and they are asking for people to donate canned goods. The extra items will be dropped off to clients to ensure they have enough food to get them through quarantines.

“If we don’t feed them, many of them won’t have anything to eat, and they won’t have any contact with anybody,” says Lani Lawrence, the assistant director at Friendship Trays. “Many of them are isolated and are in their homes by themselves.”

Volunteers are also taking extra precautions when out delivering food.

Kathy Nichols delivers food during the week and says she’s stepped up her routine and is also educating the people she visits.

“I have the gloves that I use, I make sure I wipe my hands down between every stop,” Nichols says. “I make sure that they’re okay, that they know to take precautions because some of them may not have it in the front of … the forefront of their mind that they need to take the precautions about being around people who are sneezing and coughing.”

You can drop off canned goods at Friendship Trays Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The address is 2401-A Distribution St. Charlotte, NC 28203. For more information, click here.
