DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham Housing Authority has allowed eight families to return to McDougald Terrace after carbon monoxide forced hundreds out of the housing complex six weeks ago.

Crews have been replacing appliances, such as furnaces and water heaters, that emitted the poisonous gas. They'll also replace gas stoves with electrical units.

Housing officials say more families will be able to return next week. They hope to know when all families can return by that same time.

However, some families are still living in hotels and believe they may stay there until March.

"Just feel stressed. It's too much to keep moving and moving," says Shaquana Williams, who has two kids.

DHA officials say the repairs and hotel stays have cost more than $5 million. They hope the federal government will reimburse them.
