CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The clean up continues seven months after neighbors in the Riverside Drive neighborhood in north Charlotte suffered serious flooding.
- Flooding caused millions of dollars in damage to homes in the Riverside Drive neighborhood
- Some homeowners can't stay in their homes because they are unlivable
- County has made $4 million available to assist homeowners with voluntary buyouts or to demolish or elevate homes
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services says last summer's flooding caused millions of dollars in damage.
A number of homeowners can't stay in their homes because they are unlivable.
The county made $4 million available to assist homeowners with voluntary buyouts or to demolish or elevate homes.
The agency says four properties have so far been acquired, three will be elevated with county assistance, and two homes will be demolished. 11 are eligible to apply for a grant to demolish or elevate their homes.
“The most important thing is to try and work with as many of the homeowners as we can to build back or sell their property, so the next time there is a flood the clean up is easy, or the home is not there to begin with,” says Storm Water Services Program Manager Tim Trautman.
Stormwater services says around half of the residents impacted by the flooding had flood insurance.
