WILKES COUNTY, N.C. – U.S. 421 between Wilkes and Watauga Counties has reopened after an incident led to a tractor-trailer hitting one of the sand piles coming down the mountain Thursday morning.

  • Lanes reopen after a crash involving a tractor-trailer closed U.S. 421 in Wilkes near the Watauga County line.
  • Multiple injuries were reported.

The road was closed for several hours as authorities investigated and worked to clear the accident. Details have not yet been released, but multiple injuries were initially reported.

We were told traffic was completely stopped in both directions and air care was requested following the accident.

According to NCDOT traffic information, the lanes have reopened, but travelers coming through the area may continue to experience residual traffic delays.
