CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Several Christmas deadlines to ship packages are fast approaching, which means it's crunch time at local packing shops.

  • USPS says their Christmas deadline for ground packages is December 14
  • Package costs are based on weight, size, and destination
  • Be mindful of how and what you package your items in prior to shipment

"The Christmas season is a little crazy," says Debbie Starns, owner of Dilworth Packing Company. "This [stack of packages] is just this morning."

Starns has run her business for 15 years working with four different shipping carriers. She has packed all sorts of items, such as a grandfather clock, office chairs, and large art pieces.

So she knows a thing or two about saving some money this holiday season.

"Smaller is better," Starns says. "Try to fit into one box if you can."

Package costs are based on weight, size, and destination, but packers also need to be careful what type of box items are put in.

"This box can’t be shipped postal because you can’t have any boxes with any type of sticker on the outside for the U.S. Postal Service," Starns says.

USPS reports their Christmas deadline for ground packages is December 14th. They also have a few tips when it comes to packing.

"Use a durable box," says Philip Bogenberger with USPS. "Make sure you clearly address the person it’s going to and use the proper zip code. It’s actually better to not have a zip code at all than to have an incorrect zip code."

Other carriers such as UPS and Fedex have other deadlines for their packages. In general, Starns says if it's heading to the West Coast it should be shipped by Monday. If it's heading to the Midwest or East Coast she suggests the latest is Thursday.

The sooner the better, or it could cost you.

"If it’s for Christmas, you need to get it in, because the longer you wait the more expensive it will be," Starns says.

USPS offers kiosks at some of their locations for people to use after hours. Customers can weigh packages and print shipping labels.
