NORTH CAROLINA – When college student Drew Pescaro adopted a puppy named Lily, he never imagined she would be helping him heal emotionally and physically from a school shooting.

  • Pescaro was shot in the back during the shooting on UNC Charlotte’s campus
  • He submitted Lily’s story to a contest, hoping to win a grant to give to Peak Lab Rescue of Apex
  • Today, he was presented with $50,000 grant to award to them

In April 2019, Pescaro was shot in the back during the shooting on UNC Charlotte’s campus. During the long and difficult recovery process, Lily never left his side.

Pescaro wanted to thank the dog rescue for giving him Lily. So, he submitted Lily’s story to a contest in hopes of winning a grant to give to Peak Lab Rescue of Apex.

Today, he was surprised with a $50,000 grant to award to them.

Pescaro returned to UNCC this fall and says he would not have been able to if it weren’t for Lily.

The grant was awarded through the Petco Foundation in partnership with Sketchers.
