DURHAM, N.C. – A Durham minister’s call to action includes a unique idea to reduce crime in one neighborhood.

  • Paul Scott wants to paint a crosswalk at McDougald Terrace
  • Scott wants the crosswalk to be red, green, and black to symbolize unity
  • Several shootings have taken place at that location over the years

Paul Scott is pressuring city leaders to paint the crosswalk at McDougald Terrace in Durham. Scott says he wants the crosswalk to be painted red, green, and black to symbolize unity.

“So I think a crosswalk would do wonders in improving the self-esteem of a community. Because when a community's self-esteem is improved, the violence would end,” Scott said.

Scott believes the city’s support has wavered, but some council members say, while they support the idea, they still need more residents on board.

“And the issue for us is making sure we contact enough folks in the community who indicate they want this to happen,” Councilmember Mark-Anthony Middleton said.

There have been several shootings at that location over the years.

“Let's try. Nothing else has worked. So let's try a crosswalk,” Scott said.

Scott says he got the idea when he noticed many crosswalks needed repairs anyway.
